April 1st

We fired up a transmitter and used it to check our equipment and antenna ranges. Everything worked well, we found and worked out a few quirks in some of the new equipment. No great revelations. Weather was very nice, sunny and clear. Scouted some overlooks that will be important for scanning large areas with the 7 element null peak antenna systems.

The night stayed warm, 18 bats were caught: 7 little browns, 10 long eareds, 1 smallfooted. The smallfooted is a state threatened bat that has been studied very little. It is PA's smallest bat, this one weighed in at only 4.4 grams.

The smallfoot has a very distinct face mask and long shiny fur.

Here's a close up of the keel on his calcar.

The calcar is the cartilage protrusion coming off the bats ankle. The keel (bulge) on the calcar is a identifying feature for several US bat species.
